Case Study: Little Eaton
LIttle Eaton, in Erewash, is a vibrant community, with a wide range of activities, events and groups taking place. The village hosts a Carnival, Sports Day and a whole host of events.
Sports Day is part of the Carnvial, and has activities for everyone from mums egg and spoon race and dads sack race. There is a fun run, at the beginning of the carnival. Wet, Wild and Wacky is a fabulous event, with fun for all young people, particularly teenagers.
There's a treasure hunt which about 150 people take part in each year.Key volunteers in the village take on all kinds of roles, including chairing groups, organising events, coaching, mowing the grass and running sports clubs.
In 2005, a parent in the village wanted to set up junior cricket. He started an after school cricket club on the playground. Another parent helped to run it. From here, they decided to take the club down to the park, and began playing at the cricket club. Taster sessions at school, at the beginning of each season led into coaching at the club and they ran a Kwik Cricket team, playing against neighbouring villages. In 2010, the club has grown year on year, to a point where there are now 4 sides playing, 100 junior players, with 4 qualified coaches. Coaches and volunteers mainly come from the parents of the children who play. This year, Sport England funded a bowling machine and some junior equipment, which has made the sessions much more fun and has given the club a real boost.
