There’s evidence to suggest work or educational activities can help older people overcome depression. Whilst setting goals is linked with improved wellbeing.
Immediate thoughts might lead to structured workplace learning programmes such as courses or training. That may be important, but thinking about learning from a different perspective can provide a wealth of opportunities for improved mental wellbeing.
Learning about colleagues
There’s a big link back to connecting with others. It could be about providing opportunities for employees to learn about each other – to share worries and concerns they may be burdening themselves with at home and receive words of support, advice and encouragement. This can have a really powerful affect on how somebody then approaches the working day. It could be about coming together to share work related learning too.
Supporting people to learn about themselves and what they need to do to maintain their own mental health in work is also important. Creating a culture where someone feels confident and comfortable with doing whatever they need to do is really powerful - whether that's taking 10 minutes away from the computer or quiet, private space for reflective thinking without the fear of the 'time out' being frowned upon by others.
