YOUNGSTERS from all over South Derbyshire will be taking part in their own mini Olympic Games.
online newsYoung people aged between eight and 16 will be taking part in the Youth Olympics on June 30 next year to mark the London 2012 Olympics.
Youth groups from Hatton, Etwall, Ticknall, Willington and Barrow-on-Trent will gather at the Hatton playing fields to take part in activities such as welly wanging, hay bale rolling, Space Hopper relays and jousting.
Toni Jantschenko, South Derbyshire coordinator for Village Games — an organisation set up to promote sport and communities in rural Derbyshire — is involved in organising the event.
She said: “All the ideas have come from the children.
“It’s fantastic to see so many different people are volunteering to come together to do it.
“The community spirit is phenomenal for this to happen.”
Mrs Jantschenko said: “We have been working quite closely with youth clubs and I asked about to see who would be interested in doing something like this in the community.
“It’s going to be run with volunteers from across the local groups so we involve local communities that all come together and help each other out.”
Village Games’ long-term goal is to integrate the youth groups in a bid to open up opportunities for youngsters to attend different groups and share facilities and equipment.
Teresa Croft, activity and social officer for the Youth of Hatton, said: “Youth of Hatton have been running now for three years and every year we have a sports day.
“We thought ‘we have the Olympics coming up, it would be great to try to do something for it’.”
The London Olympic Games will be held between July 27 and August 12 next year, with the Paralympic Games taking place between August 29 and September 9.
