Village Games are "spring board" for community Bootcamps
A partnership between Derbyshire Village Games and a local fitness instructor has helped get hundreds of people off the couch to get active in the great outdoors.
46 year old Gerry Henry, founder of Dark Peak Fitness (who also works with British Military Fitness) runs Bootcamps in association with Village Games throughout the High Peak and Hope Valley. In a recent race three of his "bootcampers" took part in a 11.5km military style assault course with obstacles along the whole route. They were among more than 900 competitors taking on the Majors Challenge run by BMF at Bramham Park near Leeds on Sunday 21st October.
Gerry Henry said: “Mud, smoke, water, obstacles, ditches, bogs, and more mud. That's what they faced. It was an awesome day, Team Dark Peak should be very proud of themselves”
DPF Bootcamper Julie Shaw, 40 and a Police Community Support Officer, from Buxton said: “Thank you Gerry for training us and believing in us. The Major rocked!!!!!!!.”
Kaz King, 37, owner of Capelli Hairdressers, Chapel en le Frith and attends the Chapel Bootcamps said: “Loved it ! Everyone should do it in their life if you can. We had a fab trainer and great motivator. I can’t wait to do the next one.”
Kristine Leaper, from Bradwell and works at Bradwell Fisheries, who attends the Bootcamp sessions on a Thursday and Sunday mornings, completed the course with her fellow Bamford Bootcampers in 2hrs 24 minutes. She said: “I enjoyed it that much I’m doing it all over again in March! There's no better way to start the day.”
Gerry Henry says: "Village Games have been an instrumental spring board for Dark Peak Fitness when launching Bootcamps in the community. The enthusiasm of the Village Games team is powerful and together we were able to offer our community a fitness class often only found in city centres. With the help of Village Games Co-Ordinators who are at the heart of the neighbourhood we are successfully getting hundreds of people off the couch and into the great outdoors and getting active.”
Emma Beswick, High Peak Village Games Officer, says: "It is great to work in partnership with Dark Peak Fitness. It means we are able to offer a superb workout within your home town at a time that suits you. Gerry uses local parks and playing fields which is proving very popular for those wishing to 'go natural' a gym is not for everyone and also avoids the overhead so can keep the cost to a minimum. We live in such a beautiful part of the Peak District which I believe is a major reason why it is proving so popular. It is fantastic to be able to see people taking part and making friends and keeping fit in their own community. Fab effort from the High Peak team!! Keep it up!"
Gerry Henry adds: “Bootcamp is for Men and Women of all ages and all abilities. You don’t have to be fit to start with that is why you come to bootcamp” The 1 hours sessions are fun and designed to be challenging based on military style fitness. This is not the Army, I don’t shout but I will help motivate you in our great outdoors” For just £4 per Sessions why don’t you step out of the ordinary and come and see what all the fun is about."
