Swanwick celebrates cycling with 'Tour de Amber Valley' family ride
Amber Valley Village Games has been working with residents in Swanwick to identify groups and activities which local people would like to take part in. After some initial discussion, it was decided that a family bike ride would be ideal to mark the end of the world renowned Tour de France.
So on Saturday (27 July) with the help of some dedicated volunteers, we set about organising the lesser known but by no means inferior ‘Tour de Amber Valley’!
Amber Valley Village Games Coordinator Beth Turner said:
"With the sun on our side and the lure of bacon butties at our scheduled water stop, cyclists from across the life span set off (some with a little wobble due to the large amount of time spent off the bike!). Everyone quickly settled into a steady, relaxing pace and took in the countryside views on offer. Steve, our ride leader, did a great job racing from the front to the back of the group to check that everybody was still on two wheels."
"To the delight of the younger members of the group (and one or two older ones) it was decided that we would go ‘off road’ on the way back. This involved manoeuvring around tree stumps, rocks and very steep hills! Connor, our youngest cyclist took this new terrain in his stride and managed to tackle the course with no gears and very little legs!"
"A great time was had by everyone who took part and it was agreed by everybody to organise a ride at least once a month. I would like to say thank you to Steve and Joyce at Exercise 4 All who were our ride leaders on the day, our volunteers Claire Duffin and Michelle Simmons who were a great help in organising the event and finally to all the families who came along for the ride!"
