National Play Day a Success at Eastwood Park

21st Aug 2013

National Play Day was celebrated in Eastwood Park, Hasland, near Chesterfield on the 7th of August with the help of Chesterfield Borough Council and Chesterfield Village Games.

Children of all ages got involved with families in events such as egg and spoon/sack races, tug of war, rounders, dodgeball and children’s parachute games.

Chesterfield’s Community Sport Activator Leo Shippam (pictured right), as well as several volunteers, helped organise the Village Games activities and put on sports for children and families throughout the day.

Leo said:  "It was a great day with a fantastic amount of participation from both the kids and the parents. It’s brilliant to hear that the surrounding community is itching to do more sport and physical activity and that there are so many new potential ways for people to get involved."

Mum Sarah Grayson said:  "My two daughters have really enjoyed the activities at the park today.  One of my daughters is autistic but she has joined in most activities without me by her side.  It would be great if there could be more days like this in Hasland as everybody has really enjoyed themselves and its great for them to make new friends."

J Hadfield wrote:  "Today has been excellent. My daughter has really enjoyed playing rounders, something she has never done before. I feel that having such an event in Eastwood park has been valuable for all our community and has helped enpower our children to get out and enjoy sports.  Thank you, please come back and repeat it again."

Sharon Hardy said:  "Me and my family have really enjoyed today, learning new sports and improving skills in each sport. It is nice to bring my family to events like this in our community and its lovely to see how hard they work with the kids. There is a lot of children in the community and events like this bring the children off the streets and to enjoy themselves."

Sophie Dolling and Emily Asprou told us:  "The Play day in the park has been amazing for ALL ages (even I took part aged 33 years). The Village Games staff were extremely enthusiastic + friendly, everyone really enjoyed the day and all the activities, we will defintely be at the next one."
