Tideswell Youngsters Benefit From Ozbox Sessions

The youngsters of Tideswell have been taking part since late January in Ozbox sessions at the Bishop Pursglove Primary School thanks to funding obtained by the Derbyshire Dales Village Games Team. The sessions ran until the 7th April 2014 thanks to financial support from the Acclaim Housing Group.

The OzBox scheme involves sessions of non-contact boxing and fitness training that are free to youngsters aged 11 to 19-years-old. Where there is a need and interest we also engage with younger ones.

All the equipment is provided and the sessions are free for young people, male and female, of all backgrounds and cultures to attend. The sessions are about having fun but they also teach young people to take pride in themselves and in their community.

OzBox is a unique and innovative activity. As well as benefiting local communities by offering a challenging and energetic pastime for young people, those attending OzBox sessions benefit from skilled training, with a chance of progression for those who demonstrate an aptitude for the sport.

Sessions consist of various warm-up and cool-down exercises, fitness based circuits, skipping, light-weight training with dumbbells and medicine balls. We teach the basic techniques of Olympic style boxing using focus pads/gloves/punch-bags.

All the equipment is provided and coaches are also DBS (CRB) checked, first aid trained and insured. Ozbox Programme Co-ordinator Dale Shires said “Enabling youngsters in rural areas such as Tideswell to take part in Ozbox sessions offers them something different, unique and increases social inclusion within the community. Thanks to the backing of both partners these sessions have been a success”.
