What is Generation Games?
Generation Games is funded by Derbyshire County Council and is aimed at developing opportunities for older adults and offering support to those wishing to become more active.
The scheme will focus on Holmewood and Shirland (and the surrounding areas) in year one and will expand in to Clay Cross, Grassmoor and North Wingfield in years two and three.
Support will be available to individuals wishing to become more active through providing information of local activities and offering advice on overcoming barriers to participation. We would also like to hear from clubs and groups in North East Derbyshire wishing to set up new activities.
Why become involved?
Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of death in the UK, yet only a third of people are active enough to be healthy. Taking part in physical activity will have a huge effect in reducing the likelihood of conditions such as cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, depression and arthritis.
Registering with Generation Games gives people access to up to date information about opportunities in their area, support and advice from a knowledgeable officer and be eligible for rewards at 3, 6 and 12 months.
Volunteering and Training
Generation Games will provide people with opportunities to become volunteers by supporting or leading activities and sessions. Volunteers will also be able to access training such as Walk Leaders or Chair Based Exercise. For further information please contact Hayley Bramley, Generation Games Officer (see below for details).
Generation Games Drop-in sessions
As part of the project we will be holding weekly drop-in sessions for people to come along and have a hot drink and a chat, find out more information about the project and have a go at new activities. There will also be advice and support available to help them become more active.
Drop-in sessions currently run on a Wednesday at:
St Albans Centre, Holmewood – 10am to 11.30am
Shirland Village Hall – 1pm to 2.30pm
