Wondering what shift is all about and want to know more about the work we do? Here’s the low-down on our current and past initiatives. If you’d like any more information please feel free to get in touch.
Jog Derbyshire (2012 – present)
Jog Derbyshire is a network of fun, social and friendly jogging groups spanning the length and breadth of Derbyshire. It’s been part of the shift family since 2012 but started way back in 2009. The fully qualified leaders and co-leaders welcome anyone regardless of age, fitness or ability so it’s the perfect environment for beginners to be introduced to jogging – often resulting in them catching the running bug. From making friends to improving both physical and mental health the groups have had a huge impact on hundreds of people across the county.
The cherry on the cake is our monthly trail run at the spectacular Kedleston Hall in partnership with the National Trust and Derbyshire Mind. Joggers can soak up the atmosphere of the beautiful grounds on a 5k or 10k route, with the opportunity to form and cement friendships over tea and cake at the end.

Active 4 Life (2015 – present)
Our top-notch team of community builders are at the heart of Active 4 Life. Working in Fairfield in the High Peak, New Bolsover in North East Derbyshire and Petersham in Erewash they immerse themselves in the community on an almost undercover mission. They get to know local people, take time to sit and listen to what they want in their communities and build relationships, create networks and develop a culture of physical activity.
Active 4 Life is based on a new way of working. It’s all about harnessing the skills and passions of local people to enable them to take ownership of activities for themselves. It’s about doing things with people, not to them. It’s been an adventure watching this work unfold over the past few years and we’re excited to see where it can go in the future.
Generation Games (2015 – present)
It’s no secret loneliness is a big deal in the UK today, more so amongst older people. And if people are lonely they’re more likely to be spending more time in the house on their own and less time being active. Funded by Derbyshire County Council, Generation Games is bringing positivity and togetherness to the older people of Eckington and Shirland in North East Derbyshire. By taking the time to listen to what residents enjoy and want we’re creating opportunities for them to be more physically active at the right level but also bringing them together for fun and friendship. All with the aim of improving health and wellbeing and reducing social isolation.
mindshift (2018 onwards)
mindshift is a programme of courses which will completely transform the way you work and think. If you’re ready to join the movement and think outside the box you’ve come to the right place.
We’ve searched high and low to bring you some of the best learning and development professionals. Not only do they have fantastic expertise but they’re also super nice, interesting people. The courses are designed to be engaging, practical and quite a lot of fun. With a range of cutting-edge thinking, skills, tools and behaviours, they’ll enable you to fulfill your potential and be your best self at work and beyond.

Fit 4 Life Chesterfield (2018 onwards)
It’s safe to say Fit 4 Life in Nottinghamshire had quite an impact on the people we were supporting. So much so we’re bringing the concept over the border and into Derbyshire. We’ve joined forces with Derbyshire County Council’s workplaces team to support social care staff as well as people working at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. They’ll have access to high quality one-to-one support to enable them to find local physical activity sessions which work for them – breaking down barriers such as shift work in the process.
We’re really chuffed to have Nottingham Trent University on board again to evaluate the work. Plus we’ve got Activinsights involved so people will be able to opt in to wear an activity tracker which will provide in-depth data of their activity levels over time.
Fit 4 Life Nottinghamshire (2015 – 2018)
Fit 4 Life was all about supporting people with pre or type 2 diabetes across Nottingham and South Nottinghamshire to become more active. Through tailored one-to-one sessions our super friendly gurus enabled people to identify and break down barriers as well as discussing activities they enjoyed to find local, affordable opportunities. On average over three months people lost 3kg, reduced their sitting time by one and a half hours a day and doubled the amount of moderate intensity activity they were doing.
It was also a research project, working in partnership with Clinical Commissioning Groups and Nottingham Trent University. It gave us an amazing insight into the part GP practices and other clinical networks can play in engaging with community based physical activity to improve the health of their patients.
Derbyshire Village Games (2010 – 2017)
Derbyshire Village Games led the way and built the foundations for much of the work we do now. Working within communities across Derbyshire our Village Games Officers engaged more than 6,000 people a year in regular sport and physical activity – liaising with them to find out what they wanted to do and helping to make it happen.
It was funded and guided by a partnership of eight district authorities, Derbyshire County Council and Sport England until 2017.
