International Women’s Day 2018

In celebration of International Women’s Day, here’s a selection of stories featuring inspirational women from across the world of shift.

Bolsover Nature Explorers

Sarah, Terri and Ellen have built on their passion for being active outdoors to start a Nature Explorers group in Bolsover, supported by shift Community Builder Nathan. It gives families in the local area fun ways to make the most of nature in the local area.

Sarah is hugely involved in her local area and is keen to engage young people in positive activities. Ellen is an advocate for the benefits of the outdoors on mental health and as a single mum is keen to promote activities she can take part in with her children.

Jogging helps Claire lose four stone

Claire Winfield, 37, from Ilkeston has lost over four stone in just seven months after joining a couch to 5k programme with Jog Derbyshire group Ilkeston Joggers. As a complete beginner struggling to run for more than three minutes, Claire was running 5k within a month and is now joining in with the latest Jog into January beginners.

Rachel Jennings lives in the Derbyshire village of Crich, home to shift’s CEO Andrea. She told the story of her first dabbling as a community builder to help organise a family fitness week – from the fear of rejection to the jubilation of her first successful engagement with a local resident.

Engaging young people in Nordic Walking

Izzy Murray runs Nordic Walking groups in Dronfield. As a PE teacher she has a keen interest in engaging young people in sport. Alongside her evening groups she’s taken the poles into school to use with her pupils. She is also keen to set up family sessions to help parents who don’t have childcare be able to join in.
